Design and Technology

 

Year 1

Autumn - In the autumn term, year 1 begin by looking at mechanisms. Year 1 create a moving picture making sure that they have used sliders, levers or pivots that allow parts of their design to move.

 

Spring - In the spring term, year 1 look at construction. Year 1 create a building inspired by tudor houses from the Great Fire of London times. Year 1 will look at using a variety of materials to explore techniques that will make their structures stronger.

 

Summer - In the summer term, year 1 begin to look at woodwork. Year 1 will create their own victorian style toy that will use a wooden axel with wheels, this will allow their toy to move across a surface.

Year 3

Autumn - In the atumn term, Year 3 will begin by looking at woodwork. Year 3 will start to look at joining techniques for wood in order to create a wooden frame for a Neolithic style house from the Stone Age.

 

Spring - In the spring term, Year 3 will develop their knowldge on cooking. Year 3 will safely peel, chop and grate different foods as well as prepare the food hygienically. Year 3 will also using weighing techniques to ensure the correct amount is prepared.

 

Summer - In the summer term, Year 3 will develop their knowledge of different mechanisms by looking at cams. Year 3 will create a moving object using a cam mechanism whilst also revisiting their woodworking skills.

Year 5

Autumn - In the autumn term, Year 5 will begin by looking at their contruction techniques to create an earthquake-proof bridge. Year 5 will look at different bracing techniques and will use a variety of materials to assemble their bridge. Year 5 will finish their unit by testing their bridges to see if they fall apart when tested against high vibrations.

 

Spring - In the spring term, Year 5 will be developing their knowledge of cooking by baking a Viking style honey, oat and spiced cake. Year 5 will develop their knowledge on cooking by continuing to safely and hygienically food, weigh and measure the amounts needed and also safely cook their prepared food in an oven.

 

Summer - In the summer term, Year 5 will finish the school year by lookng at their unit on woodwork. Year 5 will develop their joining and finishing woodwroking techniques to create a recycling bin.

Year 2

Autumn - In the autumn term, year 2 expand their knowledge of mechanisms by looking at winding mechanisms. Year 2 will create a winding mechanism to allow a draw bridge to open and close. 

 

Spring - In the spring term, year 2 begin to explore textiles and will focus on sewing techniques. Year 2 will begin to use a running stitch to attach two pieces of fabric together; they will create a nursing bag that could have been used by Florence Nightingale or Mary Seacole.

 

Summer - In the summer term, year 2 will begin to explore their unit on cooking. Year 2 will begin to prepare food safely and hygienically; they will also begin to peel and chop different foods.

Year 4

Autumn - In the autumn term, Year 4 will begin by developing their textiles and sewing knowledge. Year 3 will use the cross stitching or back stitching techniques to attach ifferent pieces of fabric together to create a greek headress.

 

Spring - In the spring term, Year 4 will focus on both mechanisms and construction to create a working lighthouse model. Year 4 will use recycled materials and electrical circuits to create a model of a lighthouse.

 

Summer - In the summer term, Year 4 will end the school year by looking at both construction and woodwork. Year 4 will create a Roman catapult that moves on wheels.

Year 6

Autumn - In the autumn term, Year 6 will begin by looking at construction and mechanisms to create a motorised vehicle. Year 6 will use a variety of techniques to create and assemble a motorised vehicle to be tested at the end of the unit.

 

Spring -  In the spring term, Year 6 will develop their textiles and sewing skills by creating a keyring that can be attached to their bag ready for secondary school. Year 5 can use a variety of stitching techniques to assemble the pieces of fabric together.

 

Summer - In the summer term, Year 6 will finish the school year by using their cooking knowledge to make a Woolton Pie. Year 6 will research the seasonality of different vegetables and look at why they were used in the past. Year 6 will use a variety of techniques to prepare the food hygienically and safely.
